Every Dean Koontz Movie Adaptation, Ranked
Dean Koontz’s first novel was published in 1968, and his work has been adapted to the screen numerous times, with varying degrees of success. Although he is not as well-known as Stephen King, he has had some flops and big-screen adaptations.
Hideaway stars Jeremy Sisto as a serial killer who worships Satan, and Jeff Goldblum as the unfortunate motorist who develops a psychic link with the murderer.
Whispers, the story of a woman who is repeatedly targeted by a supposedly dead killer, is largely credited with launching Koontz’s career as an author. Despite this pedigree, there’s not much to recommend about this forgettable slasher.
Servants of Twilight (1991)
Despite a strong central performance from Belinda Bauer, Koontz’s 1984 novel, originally titled Twilight, bears no resemblance to Stephenie Meyer’s paranormal romance saga. Servants of Twilight squanders the source novel’s interesting inversion of The Omen’s plot.
This one looked like it would be a hit, with Peter O’Toole, Rose McGowan, and Ben Affleck starring.
The Passengers (1977)
Based on one of Dean Koontz’s most popular horror novels, with Corey Haim in the lead and Michael Ironside in supporting roles, and a string of STV sequels, including Watchers 4 starring Mark Hamill.
Demon Seed (1977)
Demon Seed is an undeniably effective sci-fi film, memorable enough to be parodied by The Simpsons in their annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween specials. The film combines satire of The Stepford Wives with an uncomfortably brutal spin on 2001: A Space Odyssey’s AI.
Odd Thomas (2013)
Odd Thomas, a 2013 action-horror-comedy infused with quirky humor and a fast pace, is easily the best of Koontz’s screen adaptations. Star Anton Yelchin leaves an indelible mark on the history of screen horror.
