FAQ: What Are The Most Sold Fantasy Books?

What Are the Best-Selling Fantasy Books and Series of All Time?

In terms of book sales, some of the most popular fantasy books and series of all time are Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, but there are other fantasy books in the mix as well. I’ve compiled a list of those fantasy books that are estimated to have sold 50 million or more copies.

1. Harry Potter Series

The Harry Potter series as a whole has sold 450 million copies, making it the best-selling book series of all time, followed by the children’s horror series0Goosebumps0with its 62 installments, which has sold an estimated 350 million copies.

2. The Lord of the Rings

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, which was first published in 1954u20131955 and is considered a series rather than a single volume, comes out on top of the best-selling single volumes list, with some older books and religious texts being excluded due to 0unreliable0sales figures. It was first published in 1954u20131955 and is considered a series rather than a single volume.

3. The Hobbit

With an estimated 142 million copies sold, The Hobbit remains the best-selling book of all time, which is quite impressive considering that only about 20 book series have sold more than that.

4. Le Petit Prince (The Little Prince)

The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupu00e9ry, was first published in 1923, and I’d classify it as a fantasy, albeit a slightly absurdist, magical realist, and philosophical one. The Little Prince has sold 140 million copies worldwide, which is impressive for a single volume.

5. The Chronicles of Narnia

C.S. Lewis’ classic fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia has sold a total of 0120 million copies, but it ranks 023rd on the series list, with the first book, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, ranking 7th on the list of best-selling single volumes.

6. Twilight

The Twilight series as a whole ranks 25th on the best-selling series list, despite the fact that the first book was only released a little over 10 years ago, making it the list’s youngest series and one of the list’s youngest books.

7. The Vampire Chronicles

The Vampire Chronicles series by Anne Rice has sold an estimated 80 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling horror/gothic fantasy series of all time. Interview with the Vampire, the first and most famous book in the series, was published in 1976.

8. The Wheel of Time

One of the most well-known fantasy series ever written is The Eye of the World.

9. Discworld

Terry Pratchett’s 41-book Discworld comedic fantasy series is estimated to have sold over 070 million copies, making him one of the best-selling fantasy authors of all time. His books have left an indelible mark, earning him a place in the pantheon of fantasy authors.

10. A Song of Ice and Fire

This series, which is the only one on this list that isn’t yet complete, has sold an estimated total of 60 million copies, and I’m guessing that number will continue to rise as the TV show and new novels are released.

11. Watership Down

A group of rabbits embark on an epic quest in an invented society in The Secret Garden.

 What About Alice in Wonderland?

We can’t estimate how many copies of some of the titles have sold because we don’t have reliable sales figures; Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is one of the few titles missing from the list.

Honourable Mentions

The Inheritance Cycle, The Dark Tower, and The Sword of Truth round out the top three best-selling fantasy books of 2015. Other fantasy works in the “between 30 and 50 million copies sold” category include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Redwall.

Science Fiction

I didn’t include any science fiction novels or series in my list, but science fiction works do appear: The Hunger Games and Divergent trilogy rank highly on the series list, while 1984 and Dune, as well as the Star Wars series, rank highly on the single-volume list.

A Footnote

Wikipedia’s list is based on the estimated number of copies sold of each book in any language, excluding religious texts and some other books for which no reliable sales figures are available. High fantasy takes place in a parallel, fictional (“secondary”) world to the “real” or “primary” world, which is usually internally consistent but has rules that differ from the primary world. Many high fantasy stories are told from the perspective of a single main hero.
