Gellert Grindelwald was a powerful and dangerous Dark wizard who founded Nurmengard and won the Elder Wand, adopted the Deathly Hallows symbol, and was defeated by Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter books.
Early life and education
Gellert Grindelwald was born in an unknown location around 1884, and he was Bathilda Bagshot’s great-nephew. Gellert attended Durmstrang Institute and became fascinated with the Dark Arts, which led to him being expelled from the school.

Befriended Albus Dumbledore, a teenager with similar ambitions, and adopted his slogan, “For the Greater Good.” Albus had other ideas about what to do with the relics and wanted to reunite the family, so Aberforth’s daughter Ariana was killed in front of them during the ensuing chaos.
He established Nurmengard, a base for enemies and a prison with the words “For the Greater Good” carved on the entrance.
In 1945, they had a legendary duel in which the Elder Wand switched allegiance to Dumbledore, but even he later admitted that he was only a “shade more skilful” than Grindalwald.
Grindelwald was imprisoned for the rest of his life in Nurmengard, the prison he created; Voldemort broke into his cell and demanded that he tell him where the Elder Wand was hidden; when he refused, he laughed at him and killed him with the Killing Curse.
Later pupils of Durmstrang thought Grindelwald was cool because he had killed so many people that the sign of the Deathly Hallows became associated with him, and people felt it was wrong to bear it, even when it had nothing to do with him at the time.
Grindelwald had golden blond hair and blue eyes when he was younger, but by the time he was killed, he was an elderly man with sunken eyes, wrinkled cheeks, and most of his teeth had fallen out.
