Intuit QuickBooks is an accounting software package developed and marketed by Intuit, primarily for small and medium-sized businesses. It comes in on-premises and cloud-based versions and includes features such as accepting business payments, managing and paying bills, and payroll.
Intuit was founded in Mountain View, California, in 1983 by Scott Cook and Tom Proulx, following the success of Quicken for personal financial management. Intuit developed similar services for small business owners.
The first version of QuickBooks was a DOS version based on the Quicken codebase, which was popular among small business owners without formal accounting training. However, professional accountants were dissatisfied with early versions of the system, citing poor security controls as a reason.
QuickBooks now has versions for manufacturers, wholesalers, contractors, non-profit organizations, and retailers. Intuit released QuickBooks 2015 in September 2015, with several improvements to the existing versions. On September 17, 2018, Intuit announced the release of QuickBooks 2019 with some unique features. QuickBooks 2020 was released in September 2019.
The Mac (macOS) version of QuickBooks is only available in the United States, and QuickBooks Desktop is only available on a rental/subscription basis for users in the United Kingdom and Ireland, according to Intuit’s Canadian, British, and Australian divisions.
Intuit QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions now runs on Linux servers instead of Windows servers, and Intuit has added import from Excel spreadsheets, additional employee time tracking options, pre-authorization of electronic funds, and new Help functions to the 2008 version.
QuickBooks Online (QBO) is a cloud service from Intuit that charges a monthly subscription fee rather than an upfront fee and allows users to access the software exclusively through a secure Web browser logon. As of May 2014, QuickBooks Online had the most subscribers for an online accounting platform.
