Narsil – Tolkien Gateway

Narsil was King Elendil of the Du00fanedain’s sword, which was later renamed Andu00faril after it was reforged, and was famous for cutting the One Ring of Sauron’s finger out of his hand during the War of the Five Kings.

[edit] History

Telchar, most likely a Dwarven-smith of Nogrod, forged Narsil in the First Age, and it became an heirloom of the house of Elros and later of the Lords of Andunie, with the shards of Narsil being one of the heirlooms of the Kings of Arnor.

[edit] Etymology

Narsil is a Quenya name that means “red and white flame” or “white light,” and according to legend, it was a symbolic name referring to the Sun and Moon, the “chief heavenly lights, as enemies of darkness”[10].

[edit] Portrayal in adaptations

After Sauron steps on Aragorn’s sword, Narsil, instead of breaking as Elendil fell, it is reforged into Andu00faril, and shards of the broken sword are kept on display in Rivendell, but Aragorn does not see them until the third film.

References

J.R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, and other works, including works on Aragorn, Arwen, Narn i Hu00een Hu00farin, and Isildur, are among the most well-known works in the field of Middle-earth literature.

Who killed Elendil?

Isildur’s action is described as “dealing the Enemy his death blow,” but Sauron was first thrown down by the two Kings, and then the King’s Son took up the King’s Sword and finished the job, so Sauron killed Elendil and Gil-galas but was severely injured and collapsed.

How did Elendil get Narsil?

Elendil carried Narsil in the Battle of Dagorlad, where it shone with the Sun and Moon’s light, and then in the Siege of Barad-du00fbr; but Sauron killed him, and the sword broke into two pieces beneath him as he fell, and its light was extinguished.

Gandalf has a younger form in Middle-Earth who appears to be around 60, but he is actually 2019, making him older than Middle-Earth. Legolas was not born in TA 87; that date was made up for a reference book to the films. Unlike Legolas, the amount of time Gandalf spent in Middle-Earth is known.

Though he chose men after being essentially raised as an elf, it’s assumed that he retained many elvish characteristics (as Arwen does later.) And Aragorn was one of Elros’ descendants, so he has some elvish blood.

Who killed Sauron in the book?

Isildur is shown in the movie “killing” Sauron (I know he isn’t really killed, but you get my drift), but Tolkien mentions in The Fellowship of the Ring that Gil-Galad and Elendil fight and kill Sauron together but are killed in the process.

Is Gil-galad Sauron?

What kind of sword is Andúril?

Andril is a long sword or a war sword (also known as a great sword) based on classical typology and what we know from Tolkien himself. Tolkien heavily relied on medieval terminology and lore, so it should come as no surprise that Andril can be so easily categorised in that aspect.

Why didnt Boromir pick up the sword?

He doesn’t treat the broken sword with the same reverence that Aragorn does; it’s just a broken sword until it cuts him, which is a sign that it still has life, just as there is still an heir to the throne. But he doesn’t want to acknowledge that, so he dismisses the sword as a broken heirloom and walks away.

What was Aragorn’s sword before Andúril?

Narsil was a longsword wielded by King Elendil during the War of the Last Alliance, and was used by his son, Isildur, to sever the One Ring from Sauron’s grip during the war’s final battle. It was later reforged into Andril, and would become Aragorn II Elessar’s sword.
